Gropius House

Winter Pine

Richard E. Filipowski, a local sculptor of international reputation, taught design fundamentals courses at the Institute of Design, then at the Harvard Graduate School of Design at the invitation of Gropius, and finally at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 36 years, until retirement. Filip, as he was known, installed Winter Pine with Gropius’s help, anchoring it in concrete and covering the base with sod. Ise looked on to ensure that “it seemed as though it was growing out of the ground.”
