Taqiyah

New England families removed items such as this likely Turkish taqiyah (1890-1920) from their original cultural context in order to collect and display them. This stemmed from a deep-seated colonialist mentality, a process that also lay at the heart of museum-building throughout Europe and America in the nineteenth century.
