Ethel Atkins, the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, opened her Boston shop on Boylston Street in 1938. By the 1940s she had moved to the corner of fashionable Newbury and Arlington streets, near other boutiques such as Charles Sumner and Joseph Antell.
