Small Parlor Italian Landscape

In 1870 Boston architect Robert Swain Peabody (1845-1917) cofounded the firm of Peabody and Stearns which became one of the most important architectural practices in Boston. During his time as a student at the École des Beaux Arts in 1868-69, like many architects before him Peabody went on a tour of Italy, sketching scenes and creating watercolors along the way. This landscape is a reproduction of one of sixteen watercolors in Historic New England’s collections that were done by Peabody during his tour.
