Gropius House

Library Mantle Old Farm

This is a drawing of Old Farm, Mary Hemenway’s residence on Canton Ave, around the year 1876. Mary hired William Ralph Emerson to enlarge and renovate an 18th century farm house she and her late husband Augustus purchased in 1866. William Ralph Emerson was then engaged by W.E.C. and Edith to design the Eustis Estate mansion. Additionally, he designed a summer home at Manchester-by-the-Sea for Mary Hemenway, a family home for Augustus Hemenway, Jr. (Mary’s son), and a Newport summer home for Mary Channing Eustis (W.E.C.’s mother).
