Library Mantle Augustus Hemenway

Augustus Hemenway (1805-1876) was the father of Edith Hemenway Eustis. Augustus married Mary Tileston (1820-1894) in 1840. Augustus was a major shipping merchant who opened up US trade with Chile and had many other business ventures, including several Caribbean plantations. In 1850 Augustus built a Beacon Hill townhouse at 40 Mount Vernon Street and in 1866 Augustus and Mary purchased “Old Farm” on Canton Avenue in Milton, directly south of the current Eustis mansion. Augustus died just six months before Edith married W.E.C. Eustis.
