Gropius House
Dining Room Table and Chairs
This dining room suite, part of the Eustis’s original furnishings, includes the table which could be expanded with multiple leaves, two arm chairs, ten side chairs, and the firescreen. Although the pieces aren’t identical, the rope turnings on the chair backs, table legs, and firescreen uprights tie them together stylistically. Most dining room suites would also include a massive sideboard. Instead in this room the sideboard is built-in, flanked by remarkable carving thought by the Eustises to have been done by the noted Italian carver Luigi Frullini (1839-1897).
