Sara Norton traveled to England in 1897 to visit her friend, the artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and his family, staying with them for a time in London. Burne-Jones, who had painted Sara’s portrait in 1884, favored London jewelers Child & Child with custom commissions. It is likely that he steered Sara there to purchase this enameled silver butterfly.
