Boater

Braided straw hats like these are called “boaters” for their association with sailing. For centuries men wore boaters during the summer. This 1932 example belonged to William Sumner Appleton, founder of Historic New England. Beginning in the 1880s women adopted versions of these masculine items for outdoor activities.
