Birthday Card: Hans Hoffman, 1953

Hans Hoffman (1880-1966) was a German-born American painter who was highly influential both as a member of the European avant garde and as an art educator. In 1915, Hoffman established the Munich-based Schule für Bildende Kunst (School of Fine Art), which was an experiment in Modern Art Education which complemented the work of Gropius’ Bauhaus. Upon his emigration to the United States in 1932, Hoffman continued to teach in his adopted homes of New York City and Provincetown, MA.
