Art historian Alfred Barr (1902-1981) was appointed the first director of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1929 where Barr promoted the art of modernists. Influenced by the Bauhaus, Barr understood modern art as encompass not just painting and sculpture but also applied art, design, architecture, film, photography, and theater.
