Gropius House

Bed Chamber Italian Landscape

Boston architect Robert Swain Peabody (1845-1917), cofounder of the firm Peabody and Stearns, painted this scene during his travels as a student at the École des Beaux Arts in 1868-69. He must have been particularly drawn to this location because he painted it at least twice in two different scales. A reproduction of the other version is on view in the small parlor on the first floor.
