Birthday Card: Rudolf Franz Hartogh, 1953

Deaf since birth, Rudolf Hartogh was a German landscape painter who grew up in Hamburg and studied painting in Berlin, Kassel, and Weimar.

He studied from 1910 to 1919 with Max Thedy and Hans Olde at the Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel and finally went to the Bauhaus in Weimar. He belonged to the circle around Walter Gropius and Lyonel Feininger. Because of his Jewish descent, in 1944 he was deported to a concentration camp. After liberation in 1945 by US troops, he returned in 1953 to Fischerhude.
