Mughal emperor Shah Jahan married his third wife, whom he called Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “beloved ornament of the palace,” in 1612. After her death in 1631 Shah Jahan commissioned a spectacular memorial, the Taj Mahal, to house her tomb. Margaret Duncan Phillips probably brought this souvenir back to Salem, Massachusetts.
