Hilda Kraus studied with sculptor Chaim Gross and apprenticed with Georg Jensen. Her work appeared in the 1946 Museum of Modern Art exhibition Modern American Jewelry. She moved to Westport, Connecticut, in the 1950s, teaching at regional studios until the last years of her life. This brooch is representative of her early silver jewelry, before she began creating enamels in the 1960s.
